Reid makes return to Taupo

Jonny Reid - GT3

This weekend marks the final round of the 2009/10 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge to be held at Taupo Motorsport Park in the Central North Island tourist town of Taupo.

One name that is more than familiar with the 3.6km Taupo circuit is former A1GP star Jonny Reid, where in 2008 he not only put the A1Team.NZL’s Black Beauty on pole for the sprint race, but managed to bring it home in first place in front of the delighted home crowd. “I’ll always remember putting the car on pole, my radio had failed and I couldn’t hear the team but I knew we had taken pole because the crowd were all standing and there were New Zealand flags everywhere” explains Reid. “And the win that followed in Taupo was awesome.”

As Reid prepares for the final round of the series, he is comfortable in second overall in the points table, behind multiple Porsche GT3 Cup Champion Craig Baird. “My focus this weekend is looking in front and concentrating on points. It’ll be a tough ask beating Craig, but everyone will be pushing hard and I need to do the same. I like Taupo and have had success here before so I’m feeling confident of a good result.” said Reid.

Reid comes straight off a round win at Manfeild where not only did he lock away his first race win for the season, but also a very challenging round win against very tough competition against experienced Porsche drivers Matt Halliday, David Reynolds, Daniel Gaunt and Craig Baird.

Racing this weekend kicks off on Saturday with a double points race followed by two sprint races on Sunday.
