The opening round of the ASKO Appliances Endurance Series which was to be held at the Powerbuilt International Raceway today has been cancelled due to the earthquake in Christchurch this morning.
Situated between the city and the earthquake epicentre it is understood that the control tower suffered some minor damage with other likely damage still to be ascertained. More importantly the St John’s ambulance service people were unavailable due to the emergency, as well as many of the volunteers had been called to civil defence duty.
Whether the cancelled round will be raced at a later date is still undecided but will hopefully be resolved within the coming week.
Ironically the weather in Christchurch could not have been better if the round had got underway. Clear blue skies, no wind and warm sunny conditions greeted Cantabrians but their minds were on clearly on more important matters at home, and cleaning up after such a horrific early morning ordeal when the 7.1 earthquake hit, approximately 30km west of the city at 4:35am.
