Exciting racing from support classes at Timaru

There was some great racing again from the support classes at the CRC 200 at Timaru International Motor Raceway over the weekend.  While the main events were the BNT V8s and the Toyota Racing Series the weekend was filled with top class fields including the Suzuki Swifts, UDC V8 Utes, NZ Formaul Fords, Sports and Production GT and Super Trucks.

While Andre Heimgartner still leads the NZ Formula Ford Championship his successive winning run ended yesterday in the first of three races when he faulted in the opening lap and finished sixth.   Henry Thomas-Kircher was able to pick up his first win of the season.  Heimgartner went onto win the following two races and stretches his lead in the series.

A highlight of the weekend was the addition of the Super Trucks.  Eleven trucks from Australia and New Zealand provided some quite spectacular racing.  Troy Wheeler (Scania 111) from Auckland won Class B from Wellingtonian Terry McGee (Mack Vision) with Brent Jones (Ashburton) third (Bedford KM).

Shane Gray (Wellington – Kenworth W924) won Class A from Malcolm Little (Upper Hutt – Freightliner) and Peter Tangey (Wellington – Bedford KM).  Gray also was the overall winning of the weekend.

In previous rounds the Sports GT and Production GT were raced separately but this weekend the classes were combined to give the spectators both some fantastic racing as well as a vast array of machines and sounds to view.  In the Sports GT Cameron Jones (Mazda) won the weekend from Russell Mortimer (Nissan 180SX) and Geoff Short (Juno).  Local Neville Stowell (Subaru WRX) won the Production GT class from Matt Edgar (Toyota Corolla) and Scott Ballingal (Evo RS).
