Photo: Scott Dixon
Scott Dixon will start the Kentucky Indy 300 from the second row after setting the fourth quickest average speed (217.533 mph) from his  our lap qualifying run at the Kentucky Speedway today.  The latest round of the IZOD IndyCar Series gets underway at 8:45pm Saturday night local time, and is the third to last round of the ‘nail-biting’ championship.

But it was Vision Racing’s Ed Carpenter who won pole position with an average speed of 217.933 mph, his first pole in 101 starts.  Drivers determine their grid position from their average speed over four consecutive qualifying laps.

Championship leader Will Power (217.829 mph) will start on the front row for the 11th time this season.  Power enters the 200-lap race with a 23-point lead from Dixon’s Target Chip Ganassi Racing team mate Dario  Franchitti who starts 11th.

Carpenter's teammate for the third time this season, Dan Wheldon, will start a season-high third in the No. 4 National Guard Panther Racing car alongside Dixon.
