Alonso wins on debut with Ferrari

Fernado Alonso 2010 Bahrain F1 GP winner
Fernando Alonso was impressive in his first race for Ferrari at the 2010 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix winning the opening round of the season.  Consistency paid dividends’ for the team with Felipe Massa coming home second ahead of Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) and Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull).

First over the line is the winner but it was Vettel that handed the victory to Alonso after his car faltered and lost some power in the last quarter of the race.  Vettel had qualified fastest and lead for most of the race until he seemed to lose power but managed to hold onto fourth place.

Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) led team mate Michael Schumacher home for fifth and sixth places.  This was an equally impressive debut for Schumacher who was never on the pace of the top three teams Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren.

There are some notable firsts for Grand Prix racing this year.  While Schumacher’s return has overshadowed most activity in the pits, three new teams took to the gird with mixed results.

Lotus F1’s debut was remarkable with both cars completing the whole Grand Prix while two other debutante’s (Virgin and Hispania) failed.

The teams now head to Australia for the second round of the season in two weeks time.
