Bray and Hicks set pace at CIK kart meeting

Aucklanders Daniel Bray and Bradley Hicks look set to be the drivers to beat at KartSport New Zealand's 2010 CIK Trophy of New Zealand presented by Eyede NZ meeting in Wellington this weekend, qualifying quickest and claiming heat wins in their respective classes this afternoon.

In the elite Senior class, KZ2, Bray claimed pole position with a best lap of 34.760, 0.058 of a second quicker than local hero Karl Wilson and 0.105 of a second better than 2009 CIK Trophy of NZ KZ2 class title holder Ryan Grant.

Meanwhile in the top Junior class, KF3, Bradley Hicks made pole position his with a best lap of 36.741, 0.210 quicker than runner-up Andy Schofield from Cambridge and 0.212 quicker than Auckland's Paul Blomqvist who was third.

In changeable weather conditions which saw the track dry but drivers battle strong winds in the two Time Trials then rain as the first races were about to start, Bray won the day's two KZ2 class heats, the first from Bay of Plenty's Daniel Dufty and Australian visitor Matthew Hayes, the second from Dufty and defending title holder Ryan Grant.

Young gun Bradley Hicks also won his first heat in KF3 but in the second he was beaten to the chequered flag by Andy Schofield with Blomqvist third and defending CIK Trophy of NZ class title holder Arie Hutton fourth.

In the Challenge Cup support classes New Plymouth's Alex Geary was the stand out performer, qualifying quickest and winning both his heats. Rhys Tinney qualified quickest in Junior 100cc Yamaha and like Bradley Hicks claimed a win and a second place in the heats, Logan Brown was the quickest qualifier in Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha but both races were won by Cameron Smith and Karl McNicol heads into Sunday's heats and finals after being quickest Cadet in qualifying then sharing heat race wins with Jacob Cranston.
