Going from fast to first just doesnt happen overnight and in the case of young Tim Edgell it is now matter of when his first win in the BNT V8 series will occur and not if. Now in his fourth season the Aucklander is showing consistent form this year and currently lies fourth in the BNT V8s championship.
Hopefully the win will not be too far away, I think weve shown pretty good speed so far throughout this series but it hasnt come yet. Well just keep working away and hopefully in the next couple of races well have one come our way, comments Edgell. People dont understand how competitive it is in this field.
Edgells first two seasons were a known for some major crashes and from some quarters it seemed that he was always amongst any fracas on the track. We had some pretty torrid years at the beginning of the championship, having some pretty major crashes that werent our doing.
Then there was a point of difference last season with Edgell finishing seventh in the championship, (20th in 2006/07 and 15th in 2007/08). This was a series where there was a notable difference in his results, a consistency in finishing and at the front of the field. This year the momentum has continued with the team finding more speed.
Our lap times probably have been a little bit better than last year but our speed is not a lot different. We are learning to do the best with what we have on each day and that is probably were we have the improvement on last season.
Experience seems to be the key in this championship, knowing what to do with the resources the team has mixed with weather and track conditions, making the right decisions on the day.
Edgell reinforces this view, Experience with reading the conditions because with these cars you never stand still throughout the weekend. It is experience in calling the right shots at the right time is where we have improved on.
So what does it take to win?
It is a lot of elements really, the car, the team, the driver, the engine. We try and improve everything each year so we can step up.
Is it a head thing?
Definitely cos when you get that first win the pressure goes away and it comes easier. In saying that you dont need to focus on that (the first win), you just have to chip away with what youve got. There have not been many new winners this year.
Now we have some momentum and hopefully we can keep at these top guys and get a win because that is why we are here. We are looking forward to stepping up.
Edgell will look to his next opportunity to win this coming weekend as the BNT V8 series heads to the Manfeild Park, Fielding for round five of the six round championship.
