Karters compete at the 2010 New Zealand Masters Games

As one of the few true family sports it's only natural that for a lot of people the focus of KartSport is usually on the Junior classes - the one which cater for 6 to 12 year olds.

These are the ones where New Zealand's current crop of world-beating racing drivers - Scott Dixon, Wade Cunningham and Brendon Hartley got their start. And the ones which continue to produce some of the best raw driving talent in the world.

However there is more - much more - to the sport than that, as this weekend's 2010 New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin are wont to prove.

With motorcycle racing, KartSport is one of only two 'motor' sports on the annual Masters Games roster with age and class categories from drivers 30 years of age and over.

The organisation of the KartSport side of things is in the hands of the Dunedin Kart Club with  14-year event veteran John Holmes the organiser and convenor....and also keen competitor.

Holmes is a typical KartSport 'Dad,' like any number around the country the type who pays for the equipment and maintenance and makes sure his children are up in time and organised enough to get to race meetings.

His move from one side of the pit fence to the other at the Masters Games came in 2006 when his children entered - and promised to run him as he had done them for many years - at the annual Dunedin meeting.

Since then, he says, he has become hooked and returns this year - juggling both the organising and driving roles - with as many as 50 other keen Masters competitors from around the country.

Helping boost numbers this year has been KartSport New Zealand's day licence initiative, meaning drivers who perhaps have raced before but have not kept their competition licence current can acquire a licence just for the event.

Kartsport is one of over 80 sports contested at the annual New Zealand Masters Games, taking its place alongside sports as diverse as Rugby, Softball, Wind Surfing, Underwater Hockey and......Wine Options!
