Max Mosley’s legacy lives on in NZ

March_73A_2.jpg

March 73A/2 - Cars of the MSC Tasman Revival F5000 Series

March Engineering began its operations in 1969 and the March 73A/2 owned and driven by John Mackinlay is part of their legacy of single seater cars and hence entwined in this is the ex FIA and controversial president Max Mosley.

March Engineering was begun by Max Mosley, Alan Reed, Graham Cocker and Robin Herd.  (Now one needn’t ask why Mosley got his name first!)  They each had a specific area of expertise: Max Mosley looked after the commercial side, Robin Herd was the designer, Alan Rees managed the racing team and Graham Coaker oversaw production at the factory in Bicester, Oxfordshire.

This particular car was the ex Kenny Smith Oldsmobile March and was bought by MacKinlay in 1999.  Restored from a basic tub over four years history reveals very little than it gain a podium finish at Silverstone in the rain.

Originally built in 1973 it has a 4.4 Aluminium V8 Oldsmobile motor producing 440bhp.  It has been restored to the original spec’s of John Cannons 72A.

John McKinlays aim is “to prove that an Oldsmobile powered car can beat the odd chev!”
