If the Australian V8 Supercar drivers were racehorses then Jamie Whincup would have the short odds for this weekends Norton 360 Sandown Challenge. In fact you would put money on him taking the championship for the second consecutive year. Whincup is the form driver in this year Australian V8 Supercar Championship having won an astonishing seven of the twelve races this season.
Whincup could well be paying $1.05 but hard on his heels is Holden driver Will Davison in the Toll Holden Racing Team. He is only 174 points behind in the drivers championship and with 150 points available for a win this gap can be closed very quickly, particularly if Whincup has a DNF (did not finish).
Davison has been as consistent as Whincup, both finishing in the top five in nine races so far this season. The difference is that Whincup has won races.
This is the fortieth time the championship has been held at the Melbourne circuit. Drivers will race twice at the 3.1km track. The first race (32 laps) is this Saturday with a 65 lap race on Sunday. Whincup must be a sure thing.
