More points for Dixon at Iowa

Dixon kansas09_1.jpg

Victory to Target Team Chip Ganassi for Dario Franchitti but it was fifth for Kiwi Scott Dixon. Franchitti inherited the lead on Lap 200 as cars cycled through for their final pit stops under green and held off Ryan Briscoe.

Dixon was fortunate to salvage fifth after earlier having contact with Helio Castroneves.  Hideki Mutoh was third ahead of Dan Weldon with Tomas Scheckter sixth.

Helio Castroneves, who started from the pole based on entrant points when qualifications were cancelled because of a wet track, finished seventh.

Franchitti won the inaugural IndyCar Series race at Iowa Speedway in 2007 with Andretti Green Racing. He is three points behind Briscoe in the championship standings heading into the June 27 race at Richmond International Raceway.  Dixon is third fifteen points further back.

Weather foils Dixon's qualifying at Iowa

After heavy thunderstorms washed out qualifying for tomorrows Iowa Corn Indy 250 Helio Castroneves was awarded pole position while Scott Dixon starts third on row two.

Wet weather delayed the start of qualifying then officials were unable to clear starting water on the back straight.

The starting order is now based on entrant points and Castroneves got the pole in part because of the 28 points earned by Australian Will Power for the number three car in the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Florida.  His Penske team mate Ryan Briscoe starts beside him while Dixon’s Ganassi team mate Dario Franchitti starts with him on row two.

Briscoe goes into the race with the lead in the drivers' standings with 199 points. Dixon is second on 196 and Franchitti third on 188.

It's the second year in a row - and second of three visits to the track - that qualifications weren't completed. Last year, Scott Dixon started on the pole based on entrant points after rain forced cancellation.
